Coronavirus (COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2) is a virulent virus, similar in structure to SARS-CoV, the virus responsible for the SARS pandemic in 2002. COVID-19 binds to the cell surface receptor Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme-2 (ACE-2) to pass through the cell membrane and enter the host cell. The preliminary identification and characterization of the structure and mechanism of action of COVID-19, have enabled the development of early detection assays for the virus.
